The surgery marking pen is used to mark the correct site for surgery. Surgeons will also mark the planned incisions. Typically these marking pens are for single use and are immediately thrown away.

     I have a habit of keeping these pens, hoarding them, and drawing with them. Most of these illustrations were made awaiting the operating room. They were utilized as a form of expression, for understanding of the pathology, and teaching/planning of the surgery.

      I shared these illustrations on social media and have constructed this gallery from my fellowship year in hand and upper extremity surgery. I found illustrating to be extremely helpful to my understanding of the anatomy and function and encourage anyone in medicine and surgery to illustrate for themselves and for their patients.
