Black Women Orthopaedic Surgeons (BWOS)

The mission of BWOS is to support and empower black women orthopaedic surgeons through mentoring, activism, and education while advocating for health equity. Founded in 2020.

J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS)

The mission of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS) is to increase diversity within the orthopaedic profession and promote the highest quality musculoskeletal care for all people. This society was named after America's first black orthopaedic surgeon. Founded in 1998.

Founded in 2004 by orthopaedic surgeons working collaboratively with academic institutions, community surgeons, and industry to address the dearth of women and underrepresented minorities (URMs) in orthopaedic surgery.

The Perry Initiative

Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society

Founded in 1983 as a support and networking group for the growing number of women orthopaedic surgeons. The women at the first meeting felt that there were many common problems confronting them, which could best be solved by pooling resources.

International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA)

Collaborating to Improve Diversity in Orthopaedics. Founded in 2019.

Pride Ortho

Pride Ortho is a community of proactive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) individuals and their allies with a mission to provide mentorship, networking, and a sense of belonging for members of our orthopaedic community. Founded in 2020.


#SpeakUpOrtho is an initiative to increase awareness of bias, inequities, and harassment within orthopaedic surgery.



Garnes Society

The Arthur L. Garnes Society is  committed to fostering mentorship, collaboration, and fellowship among Black, African-American, and other under-represented in medicine in plastic & reconstructive surgery. Dr. Garnes was the first Black Chairman of plastic surgery. Founded in 2019.

Latino/a Plastic Surgery Society

The Latino/a Plastic Surgery Society (LPSS) was founded to inform, education and inspire the next generation of U.S. Latino/a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Founded in 2021.
